Box Office: Somehow produced for just $4 million, the latest movie from Saw's Leigh Whannell has tripled its budget after opening above initial estimates. It's probably not the breakout smash success Blumhouse was hoping for, though, so a sequel isn't very likely.

Verdict: Primed to be the best Venom movie we'll see all year, Upgrade makes good on its John Carpenter-inspired premise by serving up brief but bracing bursts of violence amid an unexpectedly poignant and nuanced character study.

This is basically a movie that gets to have its cake and eat it too: it delivers beautifully brutal action alongside witty humour and a thoughtful protagonist, played to perfection by Logan Marshall-Green.

And that Whannell did it all on such a tiny budget is nothing short of mind-boggling. Bravo.
