Ranking December 2017's Movies From Worst To Best
9. The Man Who Invented Christmas
RottenTomatoes Score: 80% (6.3/10)
Box Office: Even with its clearly limited budget, Dan Stevens' Charles Dickens biopic has just barely cracked $5.5 million to date, despite a fairly prolific international release and screening in 720 theaters in the U.S. Fingers crossed Netflix picks it up in time for next Christmas, then.
Verdict: Though it's certainly uneven in places, The Man Who Invented Christmas works largely for two reasons: Dan Stevens and Christopher Plummer's performances as Dickens and Ebenezer Scrooge respectively.
For fans of Dickens' text, there are enough neat shoutouts and clever nods to make it a worthwhile jaunt, and while wholly undemanding, it's nevertheless entertaining comfort food for this time of the year, with an agreeably surreal edge which keeps it from feeling too familiar.
