Ranking December 2018's Movies From Worst To Best

3. Free Solo

Free Solo
National Geographic Films

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98% (8.3/10)

Box Office: The sweaty-palmed rock climbing doc has grossed $11.8 million, making it the fourth documentary this year to cross the $10 million mark and also National Geographic's second-most successful theatrical release ever.

Verdict: Surely the most intense documentary of the year, Free Solo depicts the (thankfully successful) efforts of Alex Honnold to become the first human being to free solo climb the rock formation El Capitan.

As if merely capturing the feat with vertiginous camerawork wouldn't be enough, directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin also dare to dig deeper into the psychology behind the climb, and quite what would compel someone to undertake such a life-threatening task.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
