Ranking Every Chucky Movie From Worst To Best

7. Child's Play (1988)

One of the greatest insults in Child's Play is its strange pacing, and attention to detail. There's a thrilling police chase right at the start, delivering the impression this would be an '80s action movie, rather than a horror. Having showcased Charles Lee Ray transfer his soul into the doll, we're already made aware of its significance, and danger.

Naturally, it takes away any suspense throughout the rest of the movie, and kills any attempt at a mystery. Child's Play would've benefitted greatly from a lack of information towards the audience, allowing them to experience a true sense of dread and suspense. How much more exciting would've Child's Play been had we not known if Andy was the killer or not. Sadly, this was spoilt from the very beginning, and even Chucky's eventual reveal is ruined by the fact that we saw the doll move around during Eddie's death scene.

Further problems lie in the character's dumb decision making, and the annoying trope of character's trying to convey the truth to the authority, whilst clearly knowing the facts sound utterly crazy. That, and why would anyone buy a doll from a random homeless guy in a rough neighbourhood? You're just asking for trouble. Luckily, the film is saved by its creative filmmaking (particularly the practical effects), and the acting from both Alex Vincent and Brad Dourif.
