2. Batman
Christian Bale might be the highest-grossing Batman and Kevin Conroy might be the fan favourite (well, until he bashed Ben Affleck), but Michael Keaton remains the best screen Batman by some distance.
He was the only actor to manage to balance the requirements of both Bruce Wayne and Batman, and the only one to successfully realise that Wayne is the costume. He's eery, almost uncomfortable in his own skin and utterly convincing - something every actor since has missed the point of.
And of course, there's Jack Nicholson's sublime Joker. He's not quite the agent of chaos that Heath Ledger is, but he's a delightful, comical anarchist - creepy and outrageous and taking in Cesar Romano's TV performance as well as Burton's thirst for darkness. It's a joy.
