1. The Dark Knight
While The Dark Knight Rises struggles at times with story-telling, its predecessor is a perfectly formed script centred around three exceptional performances that is a stunning example of tight film-making at its best.
It might get most of its plaudits for Heath Ledger's performance, but The Dark Knight is far more than just that. Christian Bale has grown into his role as Batman, infused more of Patrick Bateman into Bruce Wayne and the central idea of preserving the idea of superheroism is incredibly compelling.
In Ledger's Joker and Eckhart's Two Face, The Dark Knight has two franchise high villains, and the film never needs to go for cheap, empty spectacle to sell either of their threat. It remains one of the most incredible achievements in modern film-making.
