Ranking Every DC Comic Book Movie From Worst To Best

Seriously, don't forget Swamp Thing.

DC Movies
Warner Bros.

It's almost becoming too easy to bash DC comic book movies as the inferior party in the imaginary two horse race with Marvel for the big box office bucks. That, of course, is absolute garbage. Wonder Woman should definitely show that much.

Not only is such a binary idea of film studios horribly reductive, it also misses the fact that some of the finest comic book movies ever made carried the DC label. Similarly, some of the finest performances in comic book movies have likewise. In other words, Marvel do not have the monopoly their fans may tell you they've always had.

Sure, DC have struggled recently with their first steps into the DCEU a little more shaky than fans will have wanted, but they've made a lot of money and Warner Bros - to their credit - are still ploughing on with their grand plan. Perseverance will hopefully pay off well. It's not like the early days of the MCU were all golden...

But looking only at more recent problems ignores the fact that there have been 30 DC Comics movies released over the past 40 years, and in that time, they've enjoyed some stunning successes. It's about time we all started to remember that.

So how do DC's movies to date rank?

30. Jonah Hex

DC Movies
Warner Bros.

It's a real shame that Jonah Hex was such a bust. It came with an incredibly talented cast - well in Josh Brolin, Michael Fassbender and John Malkovitch at least - and the comic was a great source for an alternate comic book movie. Strictly speaking, it should have been the Preacher of movies.

Unfortunately, it turned out horrifically, fudging almost every bit of good potential - from the cast through the story to the use of Mastodon on the soundtrack - thanks, apparently, to heavy-handed studio interference (where've we heard that before?). Why else would it only be 81 minutes long and make absolutely no sense?

Hex isn't just one of the worst DC movies of all time, it's the worst comic book movie ever made. And you really have to feel for Josh Brolin, who struggled manfully against the tide of effluence to try and put something memorable on screen. Sadly, he spends way too much time acting opposite Megan Fox, who sucks all goodwill into the blackhole of her terribleness.
