Ranking Every DC Movie Villain From Worst To Best

19. Zod - Michael Shannon (Man Of Steel)

Man of Steel Zod

Thanks to his death and his more recently abominable transformation into the worst rubber doll in movie history for Batman v Superman, it's easy to forget that Michael Shannon's Zod was actually a fairly solid villain in Man Of Steel.

Putting aside his Bam Margera-like vocal performance and the douche-bag beard, he was genuinely unlikeable and menacing, and he had a singular conviction to preserving a purified version of his species that made him believable as a tyrannical despot type.

Zod's malevolence, which Shannon positively spat at the audience, manifests in a cold "at all costs" manifesto, and he was a great counterpoint to Henry Cavill's morally stoic Superman. There's a little of Hitler in there, a little of Terence Stamp's original Zod and a lot of Shannon's unique brand of villain acting, and were he in a better film (and not disrespected horribly by its sequel), he might well have ranked higher.
