Ranking Every DC Original Animated Movie Worst To Best

15. Justice League: War (2014)

Justice League Doom
Warner Bros.

'War' was the full-on introduction to the New 52 universe and characters, and for better or worse, established the joint continuity that the majority of the films have taken ever since.

Playing out the uniting of the rebooted Justice League and pitting them against the formidable foe of Darkseid, makes for a fast and entertaining primer that easily feels like a grand Hollywood blockbuster, with its breakneck character exposition, quippy dialogue and big action - it's a satisfying Happy Meal.

Yet like most blockbusters, there isn't that much outside of the large mechanisms at play. Besides Batman and Green Lantern, we don't get a real chance to digest the new spins on the characters, although most likely DC wanted us to run down to the comic store to remedy this.

Oddly, the film has been oft-criticized and lesser regarded despite its slick quality. True, the Justice League uniting had become a repeated subject with the films, and there was a general knee-jerk hate to New 52's take on specific characters.

But the true culprit must've been following the milestone quality of Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, especially in a film that focuses on the League in a similar epic conflict. Still, "War" is a fine watch on its own, director Jay Olivia (as usual) brings it in the action department and the animation has rarely been better. Don't expect much other than a big superhero smash-up and you'll be nicely entertained.
