Ranking Every DC Original Animated Movie Worst To Best

16. Superman: Unbound (2013)

Justice League Doom
Warner Bros

A solid Superman solo effort centering around his first confrontation with nemesis Brainiac, voiced here with chilling authority by John Noble.

'Unbound' makes for an entertaining entry with a helping of large-scale action - plenty of vicious android army smack-downs - and Superman facing off against an adversary whom not only test his strength but his sharp intellect as well (not surprisingly with a name like Brainiac). The whole movie is based on a grand scale cat-and-mouse game the two play off each other and it makes for a gripping situation that Kal-El can't just laser his way out of.

Also great in the supporting cast is the welcome and prominent return of Supergirl - completely absent since her strong intro in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse - and the lovely Lois Lane, voiced by Stana Katic heavily channeling Margot Kidder.

Regardless of the quality in those departments, it's beginning to feel like Superman is getting the short end of the stick compared to his buddy Batman with the studio's production budgets. The animation (like Superman vs The Elite) is surprisingly low-grade for DC Animated, and the storyline is well executed but hardly one of the classic's out the back catalogue.

On top of that, this is the last solo Superman effort that's been produced for a good while, let's hope the studio turns that around because here it's proven what an appealing and dynamic hero he can be when his metal is put to the grindstone against a worthy foe.
