9. Wonder Woman (2009)

Justice League Doom
Warner Bros.

Nowadays with a handful of successful comic book runs and her memorable cinematic appearances, the character of Wonder Woman is strong in the zeitgeist, yet last decade she was still considered a bit of silly figure; the image of Lynda Carter in her invisible plane and skimpy outfit were hard to shake off.

This retelling of our favorite Amazon's rite of passage, went out of its way to remedy that by angling a fiercely adult superhero tale - from the prologue featuring a brutal mythological battle not too far off from a God of War cut-scene - it's a Wonder Woman origin tale that feels mature, surprisingly violent and emotionally engaging.

Most importantly the character of Wonder Woman is brilliantly portrayed (and strongly voiced by Keri Russell), not just as a fierce, headstrong warrior but a benevolent and admirable one too. Also, you have to give points to the writers for portraying a strong friendship between a man and women, (her and Steve Trevor) instead of going the obligatory romance route.

Still, some of the outdated source material occasionally stumbles and not all the elements gel - the sight of mythological beast battling on Capitol Hill is a little goofy - but by that point, you've invested in the characters and the fights are so watchable, you'll be too busy cheering DC's first lady on.
