Ranking Every DC Original Animated Movie Worst To Best
8. All-Star Superman (2011)
Animating and adapting Grant Morrison's layered, moving and typically subversive dissection of Superman was an ambitious concept and not one you'd think achievable for an animation studio.
In the opening scene Superman saves the day yet again but at a cost; radiation has affected his cells beyond repair and he has only a certain timeframe to live and settle his bucket-list, including revealing his identity to Lois Lane and making peace with Lex Luthor.
If that sounds like an unnecessarily grim scenario don't be fooled, 'All-Stars' is a colourful, fun and touching ode to the Man of Steel and it captures the source material through and through. The mass majority of Morrison's opus makes it in - about 3/4's to be precise - and it's lovingly replicated from Frank Quietly's distinctive art style to, for better or worse, several of the bizarre tangents the plot takes (although sadly no Bizarro World).
Disappointingly the film's running time hampers things by underselling some moments and having the whole ordeal feel overly episodic, making it miss the mark in comparison to some of the other stronger efforts on this list. Still, it's the best Superman solo film DC has produced, and if you the films final moments don't tug on your heartstrings, check your pulse.
