Ranking Every DC Original Animated Movie Worst To Best
7. Green Lantern: First Flight (2009)
Anyone else disappointed by the 2011 Green Lantern movie? You know, that Ryan Reynolds starring financial torpedo? Well, here's the remedy; 'First Flight' is Hal Jordan's origin tale done spot-on and two years prior to that misguided disaster.
The feature film and its cartoon equivalent follow a parallel path until Jordan is inducted into the Lantern Corps and that's where this story really opens up. It stays in space as Sinestro takes Jordan in as his protege and the plot becomes a thrilling Sci-Fi variation on Training Day, doesn't that sound a lot more exciting than a mediocre cookie-cutter origin tale about daddy issues?
It's a true shame this template wasn't followed for its feature counterpart; it squeezes out all the potential of an intergalactic Star Wars epic blended with a cop thriller, adding plenty of kicking action, some deliciously fun supporting characters and a great voice cast with Victor Garber (as Sinestro), Christopher Meloni (as Jordan) and the best use of Michael Madsen (as Kilawog) since the mid 90s.
Sure, there could've been more time for character building, a less typical superhero finale and it all boiling down to yet another origin story, but by this point but you can't fault it for doing exactly what it sets outs to do and doing it exceptionally well - this is the Green Lantern film to watch.
