27. Superman: Doomsday (2007)

Justice League Doom
Warner Bros.

The studio had their work cut out for them when they tackled The Death Of Superman plot-line as their first release. It was an incredibly lengthy, complex and convoluted story event from the comics, which they decided to do it all in 75 mins? Yeah, it doesn't quite work.

The plot does a nice job of establishing Superman, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor straight from the jump but in under 10 minutes ultra-villain Doomsday is introduced and already on the warpath. Then just moments later Superman is dead after their epic smash-up.

The whole thing feels breakneck and rushed, more concerned with giving us the cliff-notes version then the necessary breathing room to benefit the emotional roller coaster that the comic book experience was.

Also while the Doomsday fight is entertaining enough, the film lacks the bombast and visual finesse of later efforts and feels closer to the production value of an episode of Superman: The Animated Series.

It's a shame because there's a damn good voice cast - James Marsters as Luthor being the stand-out - and a fine eye for streamlining some of the comic's messier plot elements, but unfortunately it's more concerned with cramming the plot down our throat as quick as possible, than making us engage with it.

It's not a surprising move that the studio is currently redoing an adaptation, but this time as a meatier two-parter.
