Ranking Every Godzilla Incarnation
7. Millennium Era
The Millennium Series kicked off in 1999 and lasted until 2004, producing six films in the span. Originally Sony was tasked to bring Godzilla into the new millennia, but following the 1998 film's tanking, Toho decided to bring the creation back under their own house.
What separates this period from other eras is that there is no continuity, electing to create an anthology series instead. This was also a period that saw the best use of visual effects, no longer solely relying on miniatures and rubber suits. With this said, most films in the era fall within the average, featuring new, often generic monsters even some Godzilla diehards wouldn't recognize.
Although the films were not great, at least they gave audiences a much-needed palate cleanser. To mark the 50th anniversary, the final film in this series, Godzilla: Finals Wars, threw any and all subtlety out the window and pit Godzilla against his American studio counterpart Zilla. What followed was a quick, decisive victory for Godzilla that sent the Sony-Tristar creation back to his maker.
Other than handing the biggest mistake in the franchise a beat down this era doesn't offer much, but should get some points for experimenting with the continuity a bit. You won't find the best Godzilla movies during this period, but this series was proof that Godzilla could survive in the 21st Century.
