Ranking Every Godzilla Incarnation
6. Comics/Manga
Although technically not just one iteration, Godzilla's history in comics and manga deserves mention. Godzilla comics, while often short on written material, feature some extradorinary artwork and some epic monster battles.
Godzilla's time on the page date back to his earliest days on the screen, with the first manga hitting shelves in Japan in 1954. With the exception of King Kong vs. Godzilla, every Toho-produced film of the 20th century received a manga adaptation. Along with the adaptations, Godzilla also received a few original mangas, starting with The Last Godzilla, a direct sequel to the 1954 film.
Godzilla has a lengthy history with American publishers as well, beginning with the one-off promotional comic Godzilla vs. Megalon in 1976. Godzilla comics have been produced under monikers such as Dark Horse, IDW Publishing and, most notably, Marvel. The King of The Monsters received a 24-issue run with Marvel between 1977-79, tangling with the likes of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers.
Today, Legendary is producing supplemental comics for the Monsterverse. These comics have given background on human characters, introduced Godzilla's first antagonist, the Shinomura, and further connected the Monsterverse.
Few characters that have originated on the big screen have a longer history on the page than Godzilla. The character's tenure in both manga and comics is a testament to his lasting appeal.
