Back to where it all began.

A keystone of many a childhood, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is one hell of a nostalgic watch but does it hold up as a film?

To be brutally honest, fans might be a little disappointed when revisiting this particular instalment as an adult. The big problem with this movie is that is basically copies and pastes the book without standing on its own; yes, the first HP book is a masterpiece of children's literature, but the film so slavishly copying the book robs it of any real structure and renders the film a complete mess on the writing front.

The flat direction from Chris Columbus and terrible early performances from the child actors don't help either, and this certainly isn't the great film you probably remember. That being said, it is still a good one.

It's a fun, heart-warming fantasy adventure with an irresistible spirit, as well as a really strong introduction to the whole series. Not only does it unleash a living, breathing cinematic world that's beautifully fleshed out across the film, but it fully displays many of the best qualities of the Harry Potter films.

These include: a phenomenal supporting cast, fantastic visuals and special effects, exquisite music and the masterful storylines of the books. This movie has all of that and then some.

Most of the other HP films far outclass it, but this remains a good start for the series even if it's aged poorly.
