Ranking Every Live-Action Superman Suit From Worst To Best
9. Supergirl Suit
Most modern live-action iteration of the Superman suit past 2010 tries to distance themselves from the classic iconic look with added elements and removal of the red underwear. The CW Supergirl show’s iteration is the most classic in spirit because of its silver age style of retro-futuristic.
It is still body-wrapping like the rest of them, but it is not as skin-tight. Combined with the blue section’s texture and pattern, it looks like Kal-El is wearing full-body jeans. The most unique quality is the shoulder straps with the gold metal ends that hold the cape.
A cardinal sin of a superman suit is making the actor wearing it less charismatic than the full potential. A large chest emblem is a good thing to make Superman look in charge, but making almost everything else also large, diminishes the illusion that Clark is a huge man and instead creates the opposite illusion that he is small.
The bulky boots combined with the bulky red belt, combined with the cape shoulder straps combined with the large chest emblem, make for a small-looking Superman. With Taylor Hoechlin already being the smallest Superman actor with a height of 6’3, he looks like a regular guy in a costume.
Its redeeming quality is that the style of the show and the silver age influence of the suit means we can lie back and not take it too seriously. Its cheap look and retro-futuristic design make it charming in that light.
