Ranking Every New Movie Trailer From This Past Week
5. First Man
The debut trailer for Damien Chazelle's follow-up to La La Land packs a punch and shows off a different kind of biographical film.
Chronicling the story of Neil Armstrong and the crew of the Apollo 11, this trailer is much more interested in focusing on the danger and the mission's potential for failure than it is on the safer aspects. The spotlight is put on Gosling as a pre-moon landing Armstrong, who is attempting to stay positive in the face of great adversity.
The trailer also shows off more of Chazelle and cinematographer Linus Sandgren's ability to capture instantly iconic visuals. The first shot of the trailer, featuring Armstrong watching a ship take off as it is reflected in the glass before him is gorgeous and instantly communicates everything the audience needs to know about Armstrong's motivations and character before a single word is even spoken.
Early buzz on the film saw producers throwing around terms like 'experiential' and 'visceral' and this trailer absolutely sells that; a Neil Armstrong biopic told via 2001: A Space Odyssey.
