4. A Star Is Born
Hold on to your butts ladies and gentlemen, we've officially crossed over into expertly crafted trailer territory now.
The trailer for Bradley Cooper's directorial debut packs an unexpected emotional punch. Rather than focusing on plot details, the trailer's emphasis is almost entirely on selling the mood of the film. This consists of showing off early looks at Matthew Libatique's stunning cinematography, several intimate close-ups of both Cooper himself and Lady Gaga, and (most importantly of all) lots of original music.
Wisely, the only real plot points that are shown in this trailer are from the basic set-up. It all culminates in the trailer's final thirty seconds of footage, in which shots from the rest of the film are edited together at rapid-fire, in sync to the stunning and swelling vocals of Lady Gaga's performance.
Without revealing much of anything at all about the film, this trailer is able to effectively communicate the emotions and stakes of the film through the use of song and visuals alone.
