Ranking: Every Tim Burton Movie From Worst To Best
5. Batman (1989)
Though Burton gets plenty of flak for deviating from the source material in a number of key areas (chiefly regarding how many people Batman kills in this movie), it's still hard to deny how successful this was, as well as its influence on the deluge of comic book movies that followed.
Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson give faultless performances as Batman and The Joker respectively (and Keaton's Bruce Wayne is a true marvel), while Burton uses a German expressionistic art style to transform the Caped Crusader from the camp of the 1960s TV series into something much darker and more substantial.
It loses a few points for the twist reveal that The Joker killed Batman's parents, Batman's awkward number of kills and some general narrative bloat, but almost three decades later, it's still an incredibly good film on the whole.
Best Moment: The final image, of Batman stood high in the sky, the Bat signal shining in the distance.
