Ranking Every Tobe Hooper Film From Worst To Best

5. Mortuary

Tobe Hooper

A zombie tale with a twist turned out to be Tobe Hooper's final American film, and Mortuary is one of the most underrated in his mixed bag of a portfolio.

The movie follows a widow and her two kids as they move to a small town in California, only to find that there's something evil in the soil at their new home. Long story short, there's a weird substance there that starts attacking people and turning them into the walking dead.

Although the whole zombie thing has been done to death, Mortuary stands out from the undead crowd with strong characters and a genuinely creepy atmosphere that it works hard to maintain throughout.

In Texas Chainsaw Massacre fashion, Hooper withholds the gore in favour of more subtle scares and implied horrors, which in this case are all the more effective.
