Ranking: Every Tom Cruise Action Movie From Worst To Best
7. War Of The Worlds
By far one of the most divisive films in the filmographies of both Cruise and director Steven Spielberg, this remake of the classic H.G. Wells sci-fi yarn nevertheless delivers a visually dazzling alien invasion movie with stellar set-pieces and a rare performance by Cruise as a total everyman.
Yes, Dakota Fanning is annoying as hell in this, the 9/11 references are heavy-handed, Cruise's son (Justin Chatwin) should've stayed dead and the execution of the divisive final twist falls a little flat, but it's spry, light on its feet, thrilling, and delivers a sublimely creepy supporting turn from Tim Robbins as a greasy survivalist.
It's by no means a Spielberg classic, but it's efficient, entertaining genre film entertainment. No more, no less.
Best Moment: The tripod's first attack, where all Cruise can do is run away as those around him are vaporised into dust, while their clothes hilariously fly all over the place.
