Ranking: Every Tom Cruise Action Movie From Worst To Best
8. Mission: Impossible III
J.J. Abrams' stab at the M:I franchise adds a ton of dimension to the Ethan Hunt character by reinventing him as a family man, but of course, it's ultimately all about the ludicrous gadgets and insane action, which M:I3 duly delivers.
As is par the course for the series, the central plot is nonsense, but it remains consistently compelling thanks to its fast pace, fun tone and great performances, even if it's a shame that so many terrific actors (Billy Crudup, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Eddie Marsan to name just three) are wasted in inconsequential roles.
There are some idiotic moments (especially Hunt being resurrected by the classic "punch the heart until it beats again" routine), but the good easily outweighs the bad, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a sheer force of nature as the villainous Owen Davian.
Best Moment: It never rises above that opening pre-titles sequence where Hoffman totally loses his s*** and appears to murder Michelle Monaghan (even though it's blatantly clear he doesn't). Terrifying.
