RottenTomatoes Score: 23% (4.2/10 average) Box Office: Made on a $176 million budget, Jupiter Ascending completely tanked at the box office, having scored just $115 million almost three weeks later. In its opening weekend, the film finished third, behind box office juggernaut American Sniper, which rather embarrassingly for the Wachowskis, was in its fourth week of release. The writing had been on the wall for a while: Jupiter was either going to be an insane, surreal classic, or a campy, tone-deaf mess, and it sadly turned out to be the latter. Any film fan worth their salt wanted this to end the Wachowskis' box office slump, but with its messy plotting, cardboard characters and terrible performances (Eddie Redmayne was awful enough that some thought it might derail his Oscar campaign), it didn't stand a chance. Though the visuals were absolutely beautiful and Mila Kunis gave a solid lead performance, the movie's spectacle was trumped by a tragic lack of imagination on the part of The Matrix filmmakers.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
