Box Office: Budgetary data isn't available, but with just $3.3 million to its name after a lengthy international rollout, the Marie Colvin biopic is a straight-up commercial dud.

Verdict: Documentary filmmaker Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land) makes a mostly convincing leap to narrative features with this stirring tribute to the slain journalist.

But the real reason this movie works is Rosamund Pike's exceptionally compelling performance, transforming herself beyond a mere impression to embody Colvin's spirit throughout.

Bar a few amateur missteps from Heineman, A Private War is an affectionate dramatisation and probably should've netted Pike serious awards consideration.
