Before there was Scream, there was 1994's Wes Craven's New Nightmare acting as the go-to meta horror movie. Original Freddy creator Wes Craven must have taken one look at what had happened to his brilliant character by the 1990s and despaired, going out of his way to produce a Freddy film that returned the Springwood slasher to his terrifying origins.

New Nightmare is a fun, meta film that revolves around Heather Langenkamp (aka. Nancy Thompson) as she and her son, Dylan, are terrorised by an evil entity manifesting itself as Freddy Krueger on the set of a new fictitious Nightmare on Elm Street film. The film features cameos from Wes Craven, New Line Cinema's Bob Shaye, Freddy actor Robert Englund and even John Saxon who played Don Thompson, Nancy's father in the original film.

In the film's finale, the Freddy entity kidnaps Heather's son and she slowly begins to realise that she needs to accept her role as the final girl in Craven's new script to defeat Krueger one last time. Facing off against the evil entity in his make-believe boiler room, Dylan hides in a giant furnace from Freddy before Heather saves the little man thanks to a stab to Krueger's leg.

The mother and son tag-team then combine to lock the entity in the furnace, burning it alive and causing his dream world to explode around them.

This ending is tense, action-packed, smart and hugely rewarding for the audience to see these two great characters make it out together. It's a great death that really caps off a truly unique and interesting entry into the series.
