Ranking January 2015's Movies From Worst To Best

3. Foxcatcher

RottenTomatoes Score: 87% (7.9 out of 10) Box Office: Despite awards hype and three on-the-rise talents in starring roles, Foxcatcher has rustled up just $13.7 million against its $24 million budget. Had it scooped a Best Picture Oscar nomination after all, then perhaps this figure would be rather different. Bennett Miller directs arguably his best movie to date with this thrillingly un-thrilling real-life crime drama. Slowly building tension as both the movie's characters and the audience becomes aquainted with wealthy creep John du Pont (Steve Carell), Miller makes the most of his unusual subject matter (amateur wrestling), and wrings career-best performances from Carell, Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum (the former two of whom were Oscar-nominated for their roles). Carell in particular is a force of nature every time he's on screen, delivering a performance shockingly opposed to what most audiences thought him capable of. It all ends horribly for all involved, of course, yet rather than resort to melodrama or sensationalism, Miller shoots it with a cool detachment that's infinitely more intriguing.
