Ranking January 2015's Movies From Worst To Best

4. Ex Machina

RottenTomatoes Score: 94% (8 out of 10) Box Office: With a modest budget of $20 million (though looking decidedly costlier), Ex Machina has made $2 million so far from small international releases, though it remains to be seen whether it will connect with American audiences when it releases there in early April. Alex Garland (writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine) makes one hell of a directorial debut with this ice-cold, superbly stylish British sci-fi flick which asks provocative questions about existence and our relationship with technology. Proving decisively that there's plenty of wiggle room left in the AI/robotics sub-genre, Garland takes a decidedly artier approach to the subject matter than audiencs will be used to, steering away from lavish set-pieces and focusing instead on building scene after scene of eerie suspense. The three central performances from Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander are splendid. This is a cult movie in the making for sure, and don't be surprised if it ends up on a lot of top 10 lists in December.
