Ranking January 2015's Movies From Worst To Best

2. A Most Violent Year

RottenTomatoes Score: 90% (7.8 out of 10) Box Office: On a surprisingly high $20 million budget, the movie has scored just $1.3 million. Though its per-screen average is excellent, the nationwide rollout through January has seen it expand to just 68 cinemas in total, meaning it never really had much of a chance. Tragically snubbed for this year's Oscars despite being one of 2014's best releases, A Most Violent Year has been (slowly) expanding to more cinemas in January, allowing more people to see Oscar Isaac's fantastic star turn as a decent, honest businessman trying to stay decent and honest in a cut-throat world that is anything but. Director J.C. Chandor (Margin Call, All is Lost) delivers his best work to date, bringing enormous restraint to a movie that recalls the patient, moody thrillers of the 1970s, and while deliberately paced, should prove rewarding to viewers prepared to soak in the atmosphere. Oh, and Jessica Chastain's pretty great in it too, as usual.
