Ranking January 2018's Movies From Worst To Best
12. Downsizing
RottenTomatoes Score: 50% (5.7/10)
Box Office: Somehow budgeted for a ludicrous $68 million, Alexander Payne's Matt Damon-starring awards hopeful faltered amid mixed reviews, grossing less than half its projected opening weekend, and to date having made back barely half its bloated price tag. Ouch.
Verdict: Talk about a disappointment. Though Downsizing's first act teases a terrific, socially conscious dramedy, the movie eventually loses its way with the ill-advised introduction of Hong Chau's grating character.
Payne's litany of ideas never cohere into a particularly interesting or enjoyable whole, and so the end result is a bloated, baffling mess which thoroughly wastes the talents of a clearly game Matt Damon.
