Ranking January 2019's Movies From Worst To Best

9. Mary Queen Of Scots

Mary Queen Of Scots Saoirse Ronan
Universal

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 62% (6.3/10)

Box Office: Despite a sensibly low $25 million budget and an all-star cast, the buzzed-about period drama failed to resonate with audiences - perhaps in part due to wildly mixed reviews - only barely crossing the $30 million mark worldwide.

Verdict: Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie give typically strong performances in this well-made yet ultimately underwhelming dramatisation of a fascinating slice of British history.

Rife with clunky, expository dialogue and unevenly paced, Mary Queen of Scots also wrestles with first-time director Josie Rourke, whose helming proves sloppy and uninspired.

Still, the drama is inherently engrossing and Max Richter's score is terrific. In a better overall movie, Ronan and Robbie probably would've received Oscar nominations for their fine work.
