Box Office: Even with the appeal of rising star Timothée Chalamet and plenty of awards hype, Beautiful Boy has barely made $10 million against its $25 million price tag. Another seasonal dud for Steve Carell, sadly.

Verdict: An at once empathetic and cliched approach to the typical addiction drama formula, Beautiful Boy sees Chalamet and Carrel in fine form as usual, but it never quite convinces as anything more than a surface-deep look at drug addiction.

With bizarre editing choices and overbearing music, Beautiful Boy is undeniable Oscar bait, but it at least proves to be relatively affecting due to the remarkable central performances.
