Ranking January 2019's Movies From Worst To Best
18. Welcome To Marwen
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 31% (4.9/10)
Box Office: Robert Zemeckis' awards-baiting drama was one of the holiday season's biggest duds, grossing just $12.6 million against its estimated $50 million budget.
Not only did Welcome to Marwen open far below expectations, though, it also delivered the worst opening of Zemeckis' career and is expected to lose Universal $50–60 million once marketing is accounted for. Ouch.
Verdict: Despite the worthiness of its true story, Welcome to Marwen is quite probably the most ineptly helmed film Zemeckis has ever made.
The visual effects are more creepy than dazzling, the tone is all over the place, the editing and pacing are awful, and the CGI-soaked spectacle ultimately feels inappropriate for a story about a man wracked with PTSD.
Steve Carell really tries to make it work, though, so there's that.
