Ranking January 2019's Movies From Worst To Best

14. The Upside

The Upside
Escape Artists

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 39% (5.2/10)

Box Office: Despite being budgeted at an absurdly high $37.5 million - likely due to Kevin Hart's salary - and having sat on a studio shelf for over a year after original producer Harvey Weinstein was exiled from Hollywood, the drama remake doubled opening weekend expectations and became the first film to dethrone Aquaman from the #1 spot.

Not a big hit by any means, but not bad at all considering that another distributor probably would've just dumped it on VOD and washed their hands with it.

Verdict: Though an undeniably inferior remake of 2011's worldwide smash hit The Intouchables, The Upside is propped up by fine work from Bryan Cranston and a surprisingly restrained Kevin Hart.

It's cliched, sentimental and obvious, but also basically effective enough, even if there's not much reason to watch this over the French original.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
