Ranking Jean-Claude Van Damme's Boss Fights

9. Lionheart

Van Damme's Role: Lyon Gaultier, a deserter of the French Foreign Legion who must compete in a series of underground fights to win money for his family, which is heavily in debt.

The Bad Guy: Those sideburns alone are enough to put him toward the top of the list. His technical skills are lacking, as most of his offense boils town to open hand slaps and menacingly pointing at Lionheart (just before getting kicked all over). An imposing enough guy aesthetically, but he's mostly just a big-boned punching bag.

The Fight in a Nutshell: It's a bold exercise in tolerable repetition. Backhand, backhand, backhand. Right hook, left hook, right hook. Side kick, side kick, side kick. Lame, lame, lame! The real highlight is the inspirational speech from his coach, where he pleads with Lyon to stay down after a particularly brutal pummeling, reasoning that they already have enough money to pay off his family's debts. He doesn't stay down, of course, prompting the coach to scream "Lionheart!!!" just before a miraculous comeback.
