Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87% (7.1/10) Box Office: Though budgetary information isn't readily available, Mr. Holmes has grossed $10 million at the specialty box office, which while hardly making anyone rich, should cover costs and make it a small profit. The Verdict: While far from the over-the-top thrills of other recent Sherlock Holmes films, this adaptation of Mitch Cullins 2005 novel A Slight Trick Of The Mind gives Ian McKellen a platform to deliver one of his strongest performances, playing a 93-year-old Holmes as he reflects on his troublesome last case. It's casually paced and unassuming, but it also depicts the iconic detective like audiences have never seen him before, and though quaint, the central mystery is nevertheless gripping from beginning to end. McKellen is the real reason to watch, though: it's an awards-worthy performance of extraordinary restraint.
