Box Office: The $3.5 million Ethan Hawke-starring indie drama has just barely recouped its budget, after opening to the best per-screen average of writer-director Paul Schrader's career.

When you factor in its extremely limited release, home video should propel it to become a minor commercial success.

Verdict: Surely Paul Schrader's most accomplished directorial effort in over three decades, First Reformed reunites him with an arguably never-better - and certainly Oscar-worthy - Ethan Hawke for a fascinating slow-burn meditation on the nature of faith.

Hawke's joined by Amanda Seyfried and the surprisingly impressive Cedric the Entertainer - yes, really - for one of the year's most moodily intense experiences to date. It's all topped off by Alexander Dynan's eye-watering cinematography. Don't miss it.
