15. The Secret Of Marrowbone

Universal

RottenTomatoes Score: 48% (5.1/10)

Box Office: Produced for a modest $10 million, the Spanish horror film has just barely recouped its budget to date, largely thanks to its decent performance at the Spanish box office. Not a smash hit, but with VOD sales factored in, it'll probably do fine.

Verdict: The feature debut of The Orphanage and The Impossible's screenwriter Sergio G. Sánchez, this slow-burn horror drama touts some solid atmosphere and fine performances from an engaging ensemble (George MacKay, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton and Mia Goth), but it's fatally undermined by an inevitable third-act rug-pull.

Sánchez convinces that he's got a future as a filmmaker, for sure, though ironically it's his scripting that lets him down here.
