RottenTomatoes Score: 80% (7.7/10) Box Office: Budgeted at $8 million, this indie dramedy has made just $812,261 to date, which given the rapturous reviews and massive deal that came out of Sundance has to be more than a little disappointing. The Verdict: Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at this year's Sundance, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon's film was the undeniable breakout hit of the festival, with many touting it to be a potential Best Picture contender. Whether that's true will remain to be seen, but this adaptation of Jesse Andrews' 2012 novel is a fine rebuke to the countless stale "cancer kid" movies out there. Delivering a wealth of heart and intelligence alongside two particularly compelling performances from Thomas Mann and Olivia Cooke, this is far from an "illness of the week" film, but one of the most affecting works of its type in quiet some time. It's probably sensible to expect a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination at best, and just cross your fingers for anything more.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
