3. Cinderella
RottenTomatoes Score: 84% (7.2/10 average) Box Office: On a $95 million budget, Cinderella has trounced the box office in the two weeks since its release, pulling in $261.4 million worldwide with plenty left to go. With an opening weekend slightly behind Maleficent, expect the movie to make around $700 million when it's all said and done, making it clear that live-action Disney adaptations are very much the next big thing. The Verdict: Trust Kenneth Branagh to bring Cinderella back to the big screen in suitably classy style, and though it doesn't serve up any surprises to speak of, it's a superbly shot take on the classic tale, which also benefits from a slew of fine performances (especially Cate Blanchett as the Wicked Stepmother and Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother). Above all else, it remembers not to take itself too seriously, and though a little contemporary revisionism wouldn't have gone amiss, it's hard to fault the crowd-pleasing appeal of this sturdy production. Expect it to set the template moving forward for the already-announced live-action takes on Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo.
