RottenTomatoes Score: 7% (3/10 average) Box Office: Produced on a $10 million budget, The Cobbler's highly limited release (in around 20 cinemas) and almost universally negative reviews caused it to rake in just $24,000 on American soil, making it by far the biggest box office flop of Adam Sandler's career. The Verdict: Bad luck for Sandler, who no doubt signed onto this project from acclaimed writer-director Thomas McCarthy (The Station Agent, Win Win) with the hope that it might earn him some much needed critical cred. There's a sad irony that Sandler, playing a cobbler whose stitching machine gives him the magical power to become anyone simply by wearing their shoes, gives his best performance in a while here, but McCarthy's script is just so mawkish and tone deaf that it's difficult for his work to permeate through. The star will take most of the flak for this one even though he delivered fine work, but it's sad to see him starring in a potentially great art-house flick scoring worse reviews than Blended, That's My Boy, Just Go With It, the original Grown Ups and many more of the comedian's most maligned works. It'll no doubt just encourage him to stick to the winning financial formula.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
