Ranking May 2015's Movies From Worst To Best

11. Poltergeist

RottenTomatoes Score: 33% (4.8/10) Box Office: Though the Poltergeist remake has made $28.1 million after just a weekend at the box office, and will have easily made its $35 million budget back in the next few days, this is far south of Fox's expectations for the film. Rather surprisingly, it landed in fourth place on its first weekend (behind Tomorrowland and older releases Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road) - if there's anything studios can bank on, it's usually the horror genre, right? It's certainly not disastrous, but its under-performance has shocked analysts, and has reportedly contributed to the delay of the planned remake of Stephen King's It, given that the film also features a clown prominently in one scene. Will the movie ultimately gross less than the original's $121.7 million? It's looking pretty likely. The Verdict: This new Poltergeist has a solid director and a great cast, though there's not much reason for it to exist: the scares are somehow tamer than the 1982 movie, and there are a number of rather unnecessary character subplots which do absolutely nothing to move the film forward. Everything is predictable, and a lot of the serious stuff is pretty giggle-worthy, so there's nothing here for anyone that's seen the Tobe Hooper-directed original.
