Ranking May 2016's Movies - From Worst To Best
5. Dark Horse
RottenTomatoes Score: 95% (7.3/10)
Box Office: A $400,000+ gross for a low-budget horse documentary with a minimal marketing campaign is basically a miracle, so once home video sales are factored in, this one's probably a minor hit.
Verdict: A riveting, true-life underdog story of a Welsh barmaid who bred a horse against the odds that inexplicably became a champion, Dark Horse examines how sporting pride can bring an otherwise depressed community together, the presumed exclusivity of "elite" sports such as horse racing, and the nature of both luck and chance.
While there no doubt would have been a bigger market for this story had it been transformed into a feature film, the documentary is crowd-pleasing enough to render any such treatment positively pointless.
