Ranking May 2016's Movies - From Worst To Best
4. The Lobster
RottenTomatoes Score: 91% (7.6/10)
Box Office: Having cost around $4.5 million, the absurdist dark comedy has pulled in an impressive $8.6 million worldwide so far.
Verdict: The latest effort from Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth) is an utterly bizarre meditation on contemporary relationships that brings the best out of a terrific ensemble cast, including Rachel Weisz, Colin Farrell, Olivia Colman, Ben Whishaw, Lea Seydoux and John C. Reilly among many more.
Though its oddball premise - where single people are given 45 days to find a partner or are turned into an animal - won't be to all tastes, the dark humour and tremendous imagination of the piece combine superbly with its real-world relativism to make it one of the most trenchant satires of the last few years.
The question remains, though: how can Lanthimos make his next movie even weirder?
