Verdict: Jacques Audiard's (A Prophet, Rust and Bone) latest drama won the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, and though the choice proved controversial, it's hard to deny that Audiard's film is a tough, devastating examination of European immigration.

By all turns even-handed, visually stunning, superbly acted and, in its final moments, supremely shocking, Dheepan's unexpectedly twisty narrative may not be for all tastes, but it delivers its message with a bracing, sledgehammer force that's incredibly difficult to forget.

Film critics will be debating its Palme win for years to come, but it's a terrific drama all the same.
