Ranking October 2017's Movies From Worst To Best
17. The Mountain Between Us
RottenTomatoes Score: 42% (5.2/10)
Box Office: Though budgeted for a sensible $35 million despite its A-list cast and high-concept premise, this adaptation of Charles Martin's hit novel opened below expectations and has barely cracked $40 million so far. A bust.
Verdict: Kate Winslet and Idris Elba give it their all, and the lush location cinematography is undeniably appealing, but this survival film too often devolves into romantic slush when a more focused man vs. nature story would've sufficed.
It also fatally over-extends itself with a wildly unnecessary and totally cringe-worthy epilogue sequence. In retrospect, it's pretty surprising that such talented actors signed on for what often feels like a glorified Nicholas Sparks novel.
The dog's undeniably cute, though.
