Still, the serious dramatic high-point for Johnson in my mind is 2006's Gridiron Gang, in which he plays a prison counsellor who creates a football team of young prison inmates, in an attempt to steer them away from crime when they finally leave. The material is relatively familiar, of a role model turning disruptive youths' lives around, but again, Johnson's larger than life charisma totally sells the role and indeed the entire film. Critics were again split on the trite message it left behind, but Johnson's performance was almost universally praised. Considering Rocky's own beginnings in college football, there's no doubt this was a passion project for him, and it really shows through in the final product.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
