Box Office: With a colossal $156 million budget and opening weekend projections in the $20 million range, it's got quite the hill to climb, but strong reviews and word-of-mouth could easily make it a hit.

Verdict: What could so easily have been an exploitative, tacky blockbuster based on the 2010 BP oil spill is in fact a surprisingly restrained, visually stunning and well-acted disaster film.

With a script that avoids heavy-handedness in favour of subtlety, features Peter Berg's (Battleship, Lone Survivor) strongest direction to date and delivers a typically strong lead performance by Mark Wahlberg, Deepwater Horizon is a gripping, intense glimpse at a terrible tragedy.

If nothing else, see it for Kurt Russell and John Malkovich, who give their best performanes in quite a few years.
