Verdict: Jeremy Saulnier's (Blue Ruin, Green Room) new thriller might not live up to the gritty brilliance of his prior efforts, but it's still a richly atmospheric, terrifically acted film for those in the mood for a deliberate, eerie night in.

Jeffrey Wright and Alexander SkarsgÄrd are especially compelling in this expectation-defying revenge tale which, while hamstrung somewhat by the eccentricities of the source material, nevertheless serves up a singular stab at superficially familiar material.

If nothing else, it boasts one of the year's best shootouts - complete with lashings of nauseatingly realistic gore - and a puzzling finale that leaves plenty open for debate. Not entirely successful, but bold, ambitious and interesting.
